Festivities of Saint Miguel Arcangel

One of the most important religious celebrations in Cozumel is the festival honoring San Miguel Arcangel since he is the patron saint of the town of San Miguel de Cozumel. The celebrations begin on September 21 with presentations of colorful processions that leave the church of San Miguel in the center and cross the city. During this time, residents attend mass and participate in daily processions wearing hipiles, typical Mayan costumes.

Cozumel has honored Saint Michael the Archangel as its patron since 1848 when Reverend Rejon, a priest from Chemax Yucatán, arrived to Cozumel with settlers and an image of Saint Michael.
