Punta Sur (also called Punta Celarain) is located at the far south of the island of Cozumel in the state of Quintana Roo in Mexico. It is part of an insular protected area that covers the beaches, lagoons, lowland jungle, mangroves, and coral reef surrounding the site. It has a dimension of approximately 1 km². The Celarain Lighthouse is located on the extreme promontory of the Point and in the building built to provide service to the lighthouse there is a nautical museum that offers information about the history of the place.

To the northwest of the lighthouse is the so-called “Tumba del Caracol” (Tomb of the Snail), an archaeological vestige dedicated to Ixchel, a deity of the Mayan culture. This structure, built by the Mayans in the post-classic period, is endowed with a dome that in turn was covered with sea snails that made a buzz in strong winds. The set worked as a kind of alarm, warning about the intensity of the winds on the island. Some of the long, sandy beaches are protected to allow nesting sea turtles. Observation turrets have been built in some of the lagoons to allow the study of the species. In Punta Sur there is also the diving area called “Garganta del Diablo” (Devi´s Throat).
